Trance Top 3: Armin van Buuren Takes the Fan Vote While Tiësto Leads the Streams
By Mara Quinn·October 23, 2026
Trance fans have given a clear verdict. Armin van Buuren heads this Top 3 with 86,057 votes. Tiësto follows on 53,203, and Paul van Dyk completes the podium with 14,268. That leaves 32,854 votes between first and second and 38,935 between second and third. Nobody needs a photo finish to sort this one out.
The order is worth a closer look because audience size explains so little of it.
The reach paradox
Put the top two side by side and Tiësto is ahead on almost every streaming and social count in our data. On Spotify, Tiësto has 33,798,429 monthly listeners against Armin's 15,152,615, and 8,533,436 followers against 4,796,482. YouTube is 7,230,000 to 6,200,000, and Instagram is 7,855,501 to 5,030,332. SoundCloud and Last.fm point the same way: 2,066,685 to 1,187,795 and 2,735,235 to 1,738,312.
On those numbers, the DJ in second place has the larger footprint. The vote still went to Armin, and by a wide margin.
Where the vote lines up
Armin leads Tiësto on two platforms: TikTok (2,500,000 to 1,300,000) and Resident Advisor (58,187 to 35,724). They are also the only platform stats in this data that put all three DJs in the same order as the fan vote. Paul van Dyk is third on both, at 136,400 and 14,537.
That is a correlation, and three data points can't support a theory. It does show what a vote measures, though. Casting one takes deliberate effort, while a monthly-listener count can include a lot of casual plays. This ranking rewards the fans who actually show up and vote.
A closer race on credit
The fan vote isn't close, but DJ Radar's credit score is. Armin sits on 995 and Tiësto on 991, just four points apart at the top. Paul van Dyk's 949 is 42 points behind second place. By that measure, the real gap is between second and third.
Paul van Dyk's own shape
Third place comes with smaller headline numbers across the board: 1,705,987 Spotify monthly listeners, 538,643 Spotify followers, 1,700,000 YouTube subscribers, 672,180 Instagram followers and 173,836 SoundCloud followers.
The profile isn't just a smaller copy of the two above it, though. Paul van Dyk's 108,335 Mixcloud followers edge past Armin's 99,646. We have no Mixcloud figure for Tiësto, so that comparison only covers two of the three. Last.fm shows 903,866 listeners. The profile also lists a festival count of 252. We don't have that figure for the other two, so it can't be compared.
The map
Geographically, this podium is compact. The top two are both listed under the Netherlands, and Paul van Dyk is listed under Germany. All three have Trance as their main genre, so this is a like-for-like comparison inside one genre, not a cross-genre tally.
The takeaway
The headline is simple. Armin van Buuren wins the trance fan vote by a wide margin over a rival with more than double the Spotify monthly listeners. The more interesting story is how the numbers line up. Reach and votes measure different things, and in this Top 3 the vote follows a different pattern from the streams.
