Trance's Top 3, Decided By 60 Votes

By Imani Brooks·August 2, 2026

Some genre races are decided by a landslide. This one was decided by rounding error.

Armin van Buuren tops the trance countdown with 11,940 fan votes and a credit score of 938. Tiësto finishes on 11,880 votes and 921. That is a gap of 60 votes between first and second — across nearly 24,000 ballots cast between the two of them, a margin thin enough that any ordinary swing in turnout would have flipped the order.

Paul van Dyk closes the podium at 11,040 votes and a 913 credit score. He is 840 votes off second and 900 off the top, which sounds like a wide gap until you notice the entire top three sits inside a single 900-vote window. On credit score the compression is even sharper: 25 points separate first from third.

The vote does not follow the streaming numbers

The most instructive thing about this ranking is what it refuses to do. Tiësto carries the largest platform footprint of the three by a clear distance — 34,282,125 Spotify monthly listeners, 8,373,330 Spotify followers, 7,800,578 on Instagram, 2,735,235 Last.fm listeners and 2,066,685 on SoundCloud. Van Buuren's figures are substantial but smaller: 14,613,807 monthly listeners, 4,701,410 Spotify followers, 4,938,795 on Instagram, 1,738,312 Last.fm listeners.

And the vote went the other way, by 60 votes.

That is worth sitting with rather than explaining away. Streaming scale measures reach. A fan vote measures who people show up for when asked to name one. Van Buuren also leads the three on Resident Advisor with 58,187 followers, against 35,724 for Tiësto and 14,537 for Van Dyk — a platform that skews toward people who track club and festival bookings rather than playlists. He leads on TikTok too, at 2,400,000 to Tiësto's 1,300,000.

Van Dyk's numbers point somewhere else entirely

Third place tells a different story again. Paul van Dyk's streaming column is the smallest here — 1,722,752 Spotify monthly listeners, 525,093 followers, 903,866 on Last.fm, 648,114 on Instagram, 173,836 on SoundCloud, 123,100 on TikTok. On raw platform scale he is an order of magnitude behind the two above him. He still landed within 900 votes of the top.

The data offers one figure the others do not carry: 252 festivals. Whatever weight you assign to that, it is a different kind of count from a follower total, and it belongs to the part of a career that happens in front of people rather than in a feed. It is also the only structural difference the data marks between him and the two Dutch artists above him.

One more small inversion worth noting, since it runs against the grain of everything else: on Mixcloud, Van Dyk's 108,335 followers edge Van Buuren's 99,646.

What the podium says about the scene

All three are filed under the same main genre, trance, with no crossover hedging in the classification. Two are from the Netherlands, one from Germany. That is a narrow geographic and stylistic band for a genre with global reach, and it suggests a voting base with a firm and fairly traditional idea of what the top of trance looks like.

The scores reinforce it. When 938, 921 and 913 are your top three, the electorate is not choosing between candidates it rates differently — it is splitting hairs between candidates it rates almost identically. Sixty votes is what that looks like on a scoreboard.
