Top 3 Trance DJs: Armin van Buuren Leads a Field Separated by Just 25 Points

By Renata Alves·August 9, 2026

Trance has never lacked for figureheads, but when the credit scores settle, the top of the table tells a remarkably compressed story. Just 25 points separate first from third — 938 at the summit, 913 at the bottom step of the podium — and the vote counts are similarly bunched, with all three artists drawing north of 11,000 votes each.

Paul van Dyk holds the line for Germany

Paul van Dyk closes out the podium with a credit score of 913 on 11,040 votes, the lone German entry among two Dutch giants. His profile reads like a working DJ's ledger rather than a streaming-era highlight reel: 252 festivals logged, 903,866 Last.fm listeners, and 108,335 Mixcloud followers — the largest Mixcloud audience of any figure in this Top 3. The gap to second place is a mere 8 points, which is about as close as these races get. Whatever the platforms say, the voters clearly still rate the craft.

Tiësto: the biggest footprint, the second step

Tiësto's numbers are enormous by any measure — 34,282,125 Spotify monthly listeners, 8,373,330 Spotify followers, and 7,800,578 on Instagram, all comfortably the largest in this field. And yet he sits second, with a credit score of 921 from 11,880 votes.

That's the useful tension in this ranking. Credit score is not a popularity contest run on streaming dashboards; if it were, this article would have a different lead. Tiësto's reach is unmatched here, but the scoring puts him 17 points off the top — close enough to make next cycle interesting, far enough to be a real gap.

Armin van Buuren: the standard-bearer

Armin van Buuren takes the crown with a credit score of 938, built on 11,940 votes — the highest tally in the field. His platform profile is formidable in its own right: 14,613,807 Spotify monthly listeners, 4,938,795 Instagram followers, 2,400,000 on TikTok, and 1,187,795 on SoundCloud.

One stat worth pausing on: his 58,187 Resident Advisor followers are the most of anyone in this Top 3, ahead of Tiësto's 35,724 and van Dyk's 14,537. For a ranking rooted in credibility rather than raw reach, that RA lead is a fitting detail — the platform closest to the club-culture core is where van Buuren's margin is clearest.

What the table says about trance right now

Read together, the three profiles sketch the genre's current shape. The Netherlands supplies the top two, continuing Dutch trance's long grip on the format's commercial and creative peak, while van Dyk keeps Germany firmly in the frame. The scoring rewards different things in each case: van Buuren's balance across score and votes, Tiësto's sheer scale, van Dyk's deep catalogue of festival work.

The margins are the story, though. Eight points between second and third, seventeen between first and second, twenty-five across the whole podium. Nobody here is coasting, and nobody is safe. If the next voting cycle shifts even modestly, this order could reshuffle — which, for a genre sometimes accused of standing still, is exactly the kind of pressure worth watching.
