Top 3 Techno DJs: 180 Votes Separate the Podium

By Theo Lindqvist·July 13, 2026

Some rankings are blowouts. This one is a photo finish.

When the fan votes for techno's top tier were counted, just 180 votes separated first place from third — and the three names in contention are exactly the ones you'd expect to be trading blows at the top of the genre. Charlotte de Witte, Carl Cox and I Hate Models landed 90 votes apart at every step of the ladder, so this countdown says as much about who rallied their audience as who defines the sound.

The one at the top

Charlotte de Witte takes #1 with 11,850 votes. The reach behind that number is substantial: 1,840,356 monthly listeners on Spotify, 1,401,874 Spotify followers, and an Instagram audience of 5,557,067. With 202 festival appearances on record and a credit score of 889, the Belgian's position reads less like an upset than a confirmation of a run that's been building for years. Her 60,037 Resident Advisor followers also narrowly top this trio — a small but telling marker of standing inside the scene, not just outside it.

Ninety votes back

Carl Cox sits at #2 with 11,760 votes, and he arrives carrying the highest credit score of the three: 912. That's the quiet subplot of this ranking — fan votes and industry credit don't always move together, and the man just short of the top spot is the one the numbers rate highest. Cox's footprint is also the broadest here. Alongside 1,118,000 monthly Spotify listeners, he posts 574,197 SoundCloud followers, 380,900 on TikTok, 259,283 on Mixcloud, and the group's top Last.fm listener count at 275,624. The UK veteran's spread across platforms speaks to a career that predates most of them.

Closing the gap

Another 90 votes down, I Hate Models rounds out the podium at #3 with 11,670 votes — and a credit score of 894, itself a shade above the artist in first. The French act shows a heavy live presence, with 421 festival appearances logged, and a core following that's clearly translated to the ballot: 506,554 monthly Spotify listeners, 1,108,792 on Instagram, and 43,576 on Resident Advisor. In most fields those figures would sit comfortably clear of the pack; here they land in a dead heat.

Why it looks like this

The headline isn't really the order — it's the tightness. When the top three finish within 180 votes total, no result is safe and no gap is structural. Charlotte de Witte's platform scale gave her the edge at the top. Carl Cox's decades-deep, multi-platform base kept him a stride behind. I Hate Models' relentless festival calendar and devoted online following held the third seat under real pressure.

Read it as a snapshot of a genre with no single center of gravity. Three artists, three distinct paths to the same rarefied air, and a fan vote so close that a different week could reshuffle the whole thing. That's not a weakness in the ranking — it's the healthiest sign techno could ask for.
