Top 3 Afro House DJs: Black Coffee Leads a South African One-Two

By Sasha Volkov·August 9, 2026

Afro house has spent the last decade moving from continental pride to global default setting, and this edition of the credit rankings reflects exactly where that gravity sits: South Africa holds the top two spots, with a UK name rounding out the podium.

The summit: Black Coffee, 872

At #1, Black Coffee posts a credit score of 872, built on the deepest voter engagement in this field — 11,700 votes, comfortably more than anyone else in the top three. The South African's profile is notable less for any single towering number than for its consistency across every channel we track: 3,484,345 Spotify monthly listeners, 1,666,268 Spotify followers, 383,552 on SoundCloud, 4,972,435 on Instagram, 201,676 Last.fm listeners and 50,265 Resident Advisor followers. Add a festival count of 371 and you get the picture of an artist whose standing is broad-based rather than platform-dependent. That breadth is precisely what a credit score is designed to reward, and it's why the 62-point gap to second place exists despite fierce competition below.

The challenger: Dj Maphorisa, 810

Dj Maphorisa sits at #2 with a credit score of 810 and 7,900 votes. The streaming numbers here are formidable: 4,692,746 Spotify monthly listeners — actually ahead of Black Coffee on that single metric — and 4,465,825 Spotify followers, alongside 3,753,860 Instagram followers. Where the profile thins out is on the more scene-facing platforms: 41,324 SoundCloud followers, 34,005 Last.fm listeners and 2,819 on Resident Advisor. The contrast with the #1 spot is instructive. Maphorisa's reach on the big streaming and social platforms is enormous, but the credit score weighs engagement across the whole ecosystem, and that's where the 62 points between first and second are decided. If the RA and Last.fm numbers climb, this race gets genuinely interesting.

The outlier: Sam Binga, 716

Third place goes to the United Kingdom's Sam Binga, on a credit score of 716 with 5,069 votes — the only non-South African entry on the podium. The numbers operate at a different scale: 118,250 Spotify monthly listeners, 19,242 Spotify followers, 41,647 Last.fm listeners and 4,822 Resident Advisor followers. That last pair is worth pausing on — Binga's Last.fm and RA followings are proportionally strong relative to the streaming figures, the signature of an artist whose audience skews toward the crate-digging, community-forum end of dance music rather than the algorithmic mainstream. A 94-point gap separates second and third, the widest margin in this top three, which tells you the podium currently splits into two tiers: two artists operating at mass-audience scale, and one holding a place through scene credibility.

What the table says about the scene

Two things stand out. First, South Africa's grip on the genre's top end remains firm — the top two artists both fly the flag, and the vote counts suggest their audiences are not just large but motivated. Second, the ranking rewards different shapes of career. Black Coffee wins on all-fronts consistency; Maphorisa presses hard on raw streaming scale; Binga holds the third spot with a profile weighted toward the platforms where heads, rather than casual listeners, congregate.

The scores — 872, 810, 716 — describe a hierarchy that's settled at the top but contestable in the middle. Maphorisa has the streaming momentum to close on the leader if the scene-platform numbers follow. For now, though, the crown stays in familiar hands.
