Top 10 DJs in South Africa: Black Coffee Leads a Vote That Spans Afro House to Psy-Trance
By Theo Lindqvist·August 11, 2026
Some national polls are a coronation. This one is a coronation *and* a knife fight.
At the top, no drama: Black Coffee takes the South Africa crown with 11,700 fan votes and a credit score of 872, the highest in the field on both counts. The numbers behind the vote back it up — 3,484,345 monthly Spotify listeners, 4,972,435 Instagram followers, and a staggering 371 festival appearances logged, more than anyone else here has on the books. The Afro House standard-bearer remains the reference point for South African dance music, and the voters treated him accordingly.
Below him, things get genuinely tense. Kabza De Small and Dj Maphorisa — two names forever intertwined in South African house — land at #2 and #3 separated by just 75 votes: 7,975 to 7,900. Maphorisa actually edges Kabza on credit score, 810 to 807, which tells you how little daylight exists between them. On streaming, both are giants: Maphorisa posts 4,692,746 monthly Spotify listeners, while Kabza pairs 3,801,483 monthly listeners with 7,922,187 Spotify followers, the largest follower count in this entire top ten.
The #4–#5 battle is even closer. Protoculture, flying the flag for psy-trance in a list otherwise dominated by house music's many dialects, takes fourth with 7,192 votes — a mere 27 ahead of Euphonik's 7,165. Protoculture's 818 credit score is second only to Black Coffee's, a strong signal from a scene that doesn't always get top billing in South African coverage. Euphonik, meanwhile, brings the broader-platform profile: 197,945 Instagram followers and a presence across YouTube, TikTok and Mixcloud.
Sixth place goes to Clara La San, the list's drum & bass entry, on 7,048 votes with a 774 credit score — notable as the only bass-family representative in a top ten that leans heavily toward the house spectrum.
Sun-El Musician lands at #7 with 6,886 votes, and his deep house catalogue shows near-perfect symmetry on Spotify: 947,388 monthly listeners against 948,185 followers, the kind of ratio that suggests a genuinely locked-in audience rather than passing traffic. Kyle Watson follows at #8 with 6,665 votes, and here's a wrinkle worth flagging: his 788 credit score is higher than both Euphonik's and Clara La San's above him. Fan votes and profile strength don't always agree, and Watson — with 129,612 SoundCloud followers and 9,794 Resident Advisor followers — reads like a producer's producer whose vote count undersells his standing.
The final two spots are decided by almost nothing. DJ Lag takes #9 with 6,176 votes; Felix Laband closes the list at #10 with 6,154 — a gap of just 22 votes. They could hardly be more different artists: Lag is a house name with 795,156 monthly Spotify listeners, while Laband's leftfield electronica has built a devoted long-tail audience, reflected in 132,448 Last.fm listeners — more than several DJs ranked above him.
Step back and the shape of the vote is clear. House and its offshoots — Afro House, deep house, melodic house & techno — account for seven of the ten places, which will surprise nobody who has followed South African dance music. But the list refuses to be a monoculture: psy-trance, drum & bass and electronica all crack the top ten, and three separate battles were decided by fewer than 80 votes. Black Coffee's lead is emphatic. Everything underneath him is up for grabs.
