The State of Downtempo: Moby, DJ Shadow and the Slow-Burn Elite on DJ Radar
By Mara Quinn·July 29, 2026

Downtempo has always been electronic music's long game. While harder genres chase the drop, this scene rewards texture, restraint and records that reveal themselves over years, not weekends. On DJ Radar right now, four names carry the flag — and the board tells a story of a genre anchored by veterans and pushed forward by the UK's leftfield wing.
The leader: Moby
At the top sits Moby, the United States artist filed under Leftfield / Electronica, with a credit score of 876 built on 8,441 votes — the largest vote haul of anyone on the board. The streaming picture backs up the ranking: 9,535,736 Spotify monthly listeners, 2,260,076 Spotify followers, 3,627,988 Last.fm listeners and 1,578,606 Instagram followers. Even on TikTok, a platform not traditionally kind to slower tempos, Moby draws 467,200 followers. This is the profile of an artist whose catalogue still functions as a gateway into the genre.
The purist: DJ Shadow
Second place belongs to DJ Shadow — notably the only artist here whose main genre is listed simply as *Downtempo*. The American producer holds a credit score of 860 from 7,941 votes, just 16 points behind the leader. His footprint skews toward the heads: 454,275 SoundCloud followers and 30,318 on Mixcloud — the biggest Mixcloud following on the board — alongside 6,316,126 Spotify monthly listeners and 2,023,358 Last.fm listeners. If Moby is the genre's public face, Shadow is its archivist-in-chief.
The UK leftfield: Four Tet and Floating Points
The back half of the board is a British affair. Four Tet ranks third with a credit score of 846 from 6,655 votes, and his numbers reveal where his audience actually lives: 1,116,239 SoundCloud followers — the largest SoundCloud following among the four — plus 91,202 on Resident Advisor, the highest RA count on the board. That RA figure matters; it signals an artist whose reputation is forged in clubs and festival bookings as much as on streaming platforms.
Floating Points rounds out the four at a credit score of 824, and here's a wrinkle worth noting: his 7,006 votes actually exceed Four Tet's total, even though his platform numbers — 630,368 Spotify monthly listeners, 561,873 Last.fm listeners, 259,831 Instagram followers — run smaller. Voters clearly rate him beyond what raw streaming reach would predict, and his 61,576 RA followers suggest the club world agrees.
What defines the sound right now
The genre labels are telling. Three of the four leaders are classified as Leftfield / Electronica rather than downtempo proper — evidence that the modern scene is less a strict tempo bracket than a sensibility, absorbing ambient, jazz-adjacent and experimental influences under one slow-moving roof. Only DJ Shadow wears the downtempo tag itself.
Geographically, the board splits cleanly: the United States supplies the top two, the United Kingdom the next two. And the race, while not razor-thin, is compact — 52 points separate first from fourth, a spread that suggests no one's position is untouchable.
With only four DJs currently on the downtempo board, this is one of DJ Radar's most concentrated genre families. That scarcity cuts both ways: it makes each position hard-won, and it leaves the door open for the next slow-burn auteur to crash a very exclusive club.
