The State of Bass: Skrillex Leads a Split Kingdom of Dubstep and Drum & Bass

Bass music has never been one genre — it's a family, and DJ Radar's board proves it. Across 2,109 ranked DJs in the bass family, the current top eight break down along a clean fault line: dubstep on one side, drum & bass on the other, with the United States and United Kingdom trading blows at the top.

The leader

Skrillex sits at No. 1 with a credit score of 921 and 11,460 votes — the widest margin at the summit. The American dubstep figurehead's reach is in a class of its own here: 22,589,357 Spotify monthly listeners, 12,083,723 Instagram followers, and 6,675,563 on SoundCloud. No one else on the board comes close on raw audience.

The drum & bass wall

What's striking is how much of the top eight belongs to UK drum & bass. Sub Focus holds No. 2 (credit score 874, 7,965 votes), followed by Chase & Status at No. 4 (852), Andy C at No. 7 (839), and Shy FX at No. 8 (839). Four of the top eight fly the drum & bass flag, and all four are British.

Their edge shows up in a different metric: the stage. Chase & Status log 123 festival appearances and Andy C an even higher 132 — the two busiest festival acts in this group by a distance. Sub Focus (106) and Shy FX (92) aren't far behind. Drum & bass, the numbers suggest, is a live-driven, road-tested culture.

The dubstep contingent

Alongside Skrillex, dubstep fields ILLENIUM at No. 3 (credit score 858, 10,258,896 monthly listeners), Zeds Dead at No. 5 (845), and Borgore at No. 6 (844). ILLENIUM is the second-biggest streaming force in the top eight and carries 1,161,902 Instagram followers. Borgore, from Israel, is the outlier on origin and on platform: his 3,805,479 SoundCloud followers dwarf his 610,265 Spotify monthly listeners, a reminder that in bass, SoundCloud still matters.

Zeds Dead, the lone Canadian act in the group, round out the dubstep bloc at No. 5 with 8,081 votes.

What defines the sound right now

The board tells a two-track story. Dubstep leads on scale — Skrillex and ILLENIUM own the streaming and social ceilings, and the American acts skew toward mass digital audience. Drum & bass leads on endurance — the British contingent's festival counts (92 to 132 appearances each) point to a scene built on relentless touring and dancefloor authority.

The credit scores stay tight below the leader: from Sub Focus at 874 down to Shy FX at 839, only 35 points separate ranks two through eight. That compression means the middle of the bass board is genuinely contested — a single strong season could reshuffle it.

What unites all eight is low-end obsession expressed in different dialects: the maximalist drops of dubstep and the rolling, high-tempo pressure of drum & bass. On DJ Radar today, bass isn't a monolith. It's a rivalry — and right now, Skrillex is the only name standing above the argument.
