South Africa's DJ Board Runs 81 Deep, and Black Coffee Still Sits 112 Points Clear
By Renata Alves·October 17, 2026

South Africa has 81 DJs on the DJ Radar board right now, and the top of that list reads like a map of how many directions house music can be pulled in at once. Afro House, straight house, deep house, melodic house and techno, psy-trance, bass and club: the eight highest-ranked names cover all of it, and five of them are separated by just 18 credit points.
Black Coffee, in a lane of his own
Rank one is not close. Black Coffee's credit score of 966 sits 112 points clear of the next South African name, and his 32,523 votes are nearly four times anyone else's on this list. His profile logs 371 festival appearances, and the Afro House selector's reach is broad across every platform tracked: 3,354,504 Spotify monthly listeners, 1,739,827 Spotify followers, 5,073,043 Instagram followers, 383,552 on SoundCloud, 201,676 Last.fm listeners and 50,265 Resident Advisor followers. On this board, he is the benchmark the rest of the country is measured against.
The 18-point pack
Kabza De Small holds second at 854, with 8,641 votes, the second-highest tally in the country. Filed under House, he draws 4,002,126 Spotify monthly listeners, 3,178,471 Instagram followers and 630,000 YouTube subscribers.
Seven points behind him, Protoculture is the genre outlier of the top eight. Psy-Trance is his main lane, and his score of 847 comes with 6,892 votes, 178,364 Spotify monthly listeners and 126,570 Last.fm listeners. His 33,537 SoundCloud followers point to an audience that lives closer to the mix than the playlist.
Dj Maphorisa sits four points further back at 843 with 7,930 votes. The Afro House producer has the largest streaming audience in the top five, with 5,170,446 Spotify monthly listeners, plus 1,480,000 YouTube subscribers and 3,827,320 Instagram followers.
Then comes a genuine dead heat. Kyle Watson and Clara La San both score 836, and only seven votes separate them: 7,104 to 7,097. Watson works in Melodic House & Techno and carries a strong underground footprint, with 129,612 SoundCloud followers, 9,794 Resident Advisor followers, 130,179 Last.fm listeners and 669,079 Spotify monthly listeners. Clara La San, the only woman in the South African top eight, plays Bass / Club and reaches a different crowd entirely: 362,000 TikTok followers, 561,470 Last.fm listeners and 769,859 Spotify followers.
Euphonik and Sun‐El Musician round it out
Euphonik ranks seventh at 806. His 7,192 votes actually outnumber those of Protoculture, Watson and Clara La San, which makes his lower score a reminder that votes are only one input. He plays House, and his audience skews social: 197,945 Instagram followers against 193,952 Spotify monthly listeners and 146,303 Spotify followers.
Sun‐El Musician closes the top eight at 793 with 6,938 votes. The Deep House artist has 1,060,619 Spotify monthly listeners, 970,715 Spotify followers, 172,000 YouTube subscribers, 315,178 Instagram followers and 145,300 on TikTok.
What the data says about the local sound
Six of these eight DJs sit in a house-family genre: Afro House twice, House twice, Deep House and Melodic House & Techno. That is the spine of the South African board. Protoculture's psy-trance and Clara La San's bass and club work are the two exceptions, and both rank inside the top six, so the scene is not a monoculture.
The other story is depth. One artist at 966 is a headline. Five more between 836 and 854, with a seventh at 806 and an eighth at 793, is a bench. With 81 DJs on the board and the gaps between ranks two and six this narrow, the order below Black Coffee is likely to shift. The question is not whether South Africa has a scene worth watching, but which of these names moves next.
