Psytrance Power Rankings: Israel's Grip on the Global Top Eight

Psytrance has never been a small scene — 1,014 DJs currently sit on DJ Radar's psytrance board — but its leadership is remarkably concentrated. Four of the top eight names hail from Israel, a country whose relationship with the genre runs deep, and the very top of the table isn't especially close.

The front-runner

Vini Vici hold the number one spot with a credit score of 874, built on 10,470 votes — the largest vote haul of any act in the top eight by a wide margin. The streaming picture backs it up: 3,132,968 Spotify monthly listeners and 726,282 Instagram followers make them the most-streamed and most-followed act on this list across those platforms. The gap to second place is 32 points, which in credit-score terms is daylight.

The veterans holding the line

Infected Mushroom sit second on 842. Their profile skews differently from the leader's: 1,042,022 Last.fm listeners — the highest Last.fm figure in the top eight — alongside 822,267 Spotify followers and 281,323 on SoundCloud. It's the footprint of an act with a long, deep catalogue rather than a purely streaming-era audience.

Astrix completes an all-Israeli podium at 836, and the balance of the profile is striking: 701,879 Spotify monthly listeners, 481,389 SoundCloud followers, 595,654 on Instagram, and 9,973 Resident Advisor followers — the highest RA count on the board's top eight. Few acts here are this evenly strong everywhere.

A four-way squeeze below the podium

The real fight is further down. Just 12 points separate fifth from eighth — Protoculture (818), Bliss (810), Simon Patterson (808) and Neelix (806) — and only four points cover ranks six through eight. Any of these could reshuffle on the next voting cycle.

Switzerland's Liquid Soul sits fourth on 823 with 476,084 Spotify monthly listeners. South Africa's Protoculture and the UK's Simon Patterson widen the map beyond Israel's stronghold, with Patterson notable for a strong Mixcloud base of 19,205 followers — a platform where most of his peers barely register. Germany's Neelix, despite ranking eighth, posts streaming numbers that rival the podium: 771,814 Spotify monthly listeners and 414,008 Spotify followers, more monthly listeners than anyone here except Vini Vici.

Israeli act Bliss rounds out the home-nation contingent at sixth, with 380,703 Last.fm listeners underscoring a substantial listening audience.

What defines the sound

Psytrance remains one of electronic music's most distinctive propositions: driving, hypnotic grooves, dense psychedelic sound design, and a festival culture that prizes immersion over radio-friendly hooks. What this table shows is a genre with a clear geographic centre of gravity — Israel supplies half the top eight — but genuine global reach, with Switzerland, South Africa, the UK and Germany all represented.

It also shows a scene with two tiers of competition: a settled elite at the top, where Vini Vici's 874 and vote count of 10,470 look secure for now, and a volatile chasing pack where a handful of points — and a good season of releases and festival slots — could change everything. With over a thousand DJs on the board, the pipeline behind them is anything but thin.
