Moby Tops Downtempo's Top 3 While DJ Shadow Edges Four Tet by 227 Votes

By Sasha VolkovΒ·October 31, 2026

Downtempo is meant to be the quiet corner of electronic music. This year's fan vote was decided by reach. Moby takes the top spot in DJ Radar's downtempo ranking with 8,865 votes. DJ Shadow follows with 7,978, and Four Tet completes the podium on 7,751.

The winner isn't the interesting part. The interesting part is how the order beneath him was settled, and how far that order departs from our credit scores.

Moby's margin is real

Moby leads second place by 887 votes, the widest gap on this podium. His platform profile explains it without much argument. His 9,776,510 Spotify monthly listeners are more than DJ Shadow's and Four Tet's combined. He also leads the three on Spotify followers (2,345,376), YouTube (1,090,000), Instagram (1,750,628) and Last.fm listeners (3,627,988).

He doesn't lead everywhere. Four Tet beats him on Resident Advisor and DJ Shadow beats him on Mixcloud. Still, one platform isn't propping up this lead: it holds across five separate metrics. His credit score of 908 is also the highest of the three, so this time the fan vote and the composite score agree on who belongs at the top.

He is also the only artist in this Top 3 whose main genre is listed as Downtempo. The other two come in through the wider downtempo family, and both are filed under Leftfield / Electronica. The category works less as a single sound than as a broad home for slower, headier electronic music.

The real race is for second

Here the margin shrinks to 227 votes. DJ Shadow holds second on 7,978 and Four Tet sits third on 7,751.

On paper, Four Tet has a case. His credit score of 900 beats DJ Shadow's 887. He has more followers than Shadow on Spotify (851,338 to 771,832) and on Instagram (631,429 to 254,068). On Resident Advisor he leads the whole podium with 91,202 followers, ahead of Moby's 80,123 and well clear of Shadow's 34,683. That is the strongest club-facing signal of anyone here.

So why is he third? Look at how many people listen rather than how many follow. DJ Shadow draws 5,990,335 Spotify monthly listeners to Four Tet's 3,039,603, and 2,023,358 Last.fm listeners to Four Tet's 1,319,456. For all three artists, those two listening metrics follow the vote order exactly. Spotify followers, Instagram and credit score do not.

Shadow also has the biggest Mixcloud number on the board (30,318). On YouTube he has more than twice Four Tet's count, 264,000 to 127,000.

What the podium says about the scene

Two of the three come from the United States and one from the United Kingdom. The bigger split, though, is between two kinds of audience. Moby and DJ Shadow pull the larger listening numbers. Four Tet's profile leans toward the platform where club audiences follow artists. In a fan vote, the bigger listening base won, but only narrowly in the race for second.

The credit scores tell a closer story than the votes. Only 21 points separate the highest (908) from the lowest (887). By that measure these are three artists working at roughly the same level, ranked by how many listeners each one brings to the ballot.

That makes the second-place gap the one to watch. At 227 votes it is the smallest margin on this podium and the one most likely to change. Moby's lead, at 887, looks far safer.
