Inside Commercial Dance: Guetta, Garrix and the Pop-Meets-Big-Room Elite on DJ Radar

Inside Commercial Dance: Guetta, Garrix and the Pop-Meets-Big-Room Elite on DJ Radar

Commercial is the broadest category in dance music, and on DJ Radar it's a crowded one: 92 DJs currently sit on the commercial board. The top of that board shows what the scene rewards right now, and the answer isn't a single sound.

Three lanes, one scene

The main genres of the current top eight split the commercial family into three lanes. Dance / Pop covers David Guetta, Calvin Harris and Avicii. Mainstage is the tag for Martin Garrix and Alok. Big Room covers Hardwell, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Swedish House Mafia.

That split is what defines commercial here. The sound is built for streaming playlists on one side and for the biggest stages on the other. Neither side controls the top eight: Dance / Pop and Big Room hold three places each, and Mainstage holds two.

The two at the summit

David Guetta, representing France, leads with a credit score of 995 and 85,688 votes, the most of anyone in the top eight. His platform numbers back it up: 82,041,818 Spotify monthly listeners and 27,900,000 YouTube subscribers, the largest figures in this group on both.

Martin Garrix, from the Netherlands, is the only one close. His score of 987 puts him 8 points behind Guetta, and his 53,013 votes are far ahead of everyone below him. As the board's top Mainstage name, he pairs 22,286,411 Spotify monthly listeners with 15,328,754 Instagram followers.

Then there's a real gap. Calvin Harris is third on 945, 42 points behind Garrix.

Streams aren't the scoreboard

Harris shows most clearly that rank on DJ Radar doesn't simply follow streaming. The United Kingdom's Dance / Pop leader draws 73,679,829 Spotify monthly listeners, second only to Guetta in this group, yet his 14,755 votes are a fraction of the top two's totals.

Avicii shows the same pattern: 37,981,181 monthly listeners and 21,600,000 YouTube subscribers, but 8,964 votes and a score of 912, which places eighth.

Hardwell runs the other way. Representing the Netherlands, he holds fourth on 924 with 5,592,219 Spotify monthly listeners, the lowest in the top eight, supported by 13,163 votes.

A 12-point pack

Below the top three, the race is close. From Hardwell at 924 down to Avicii at 912, five acts sit within 12 points of each other. On votes, just 249 separate Hardwell (13,163), Alok (12,993) and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike (12,914).

Alok, representing Brazil, sits fifth on 919. He brings 23,701,498 Spotify monthly listeners alongside 28,735,311 Instagram and 15,100,000 TikTok followers.

Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, from Belgium, sits sixth on 917 with 13,876,010 Spotify monthly listeners. Swedish House Mafia completes the Big Room trio in seventh, pairing a 913 score with 27,496,349 Spotify monthly listeners.

The map

The Netherlands and Sweden each place two acts in the top eight: Garrix and Hardwell, and Swedish House Mafia and Avicii. France, the United Kingdom, Brazil and Belgium have one each. That's six countries across eight spots, which tells you how international the commercial scene is.

What it adds up to

Commercial on DJ Radar is a two-way contest at the top with a scramble underneath. Guetta and Garrix have built vote totals that nobody else in the top eight comes near. Below the top three, the margins are thin enough that the order looks far from settled.

As for the sound, the top eight is split almost evenly between Dance / Pop, Mainstage and Big Room. Commercial isn't one style. It's where song-led dance music and festival-scale production meet, and right now both are well represented at the top.
