Hong Kong Rising: A Photo Finish at the Summit

Five DJs currently represent Hong Kong on the DJ Radar board, and the fight for first is about as close as rankings get. Janette Slack holds first place with a credit score of 564. N.O.A sits a single point behind on 563. Celestial 天上 completes the podium on 558.

That puts six points between first and third. Below the podium the board opens up: Ardolf (359) and Norvik (328) round out the top five, and 199 points separate third place from fourth.

Votes don't decide everything

The most striking thing about Hong Kong's table is how loosely vote totals track rank. Celestial 天上 has the most votes in the city at 3,571, and N.O.A is close behind on 3,540. Janette Slack tops the board with 1,815, roughly half as many as either.

The same pattern shows up lower down. Norvik has drawn 820 votes to Ardolf's 777, but Ardolf holds fourth. On this board, the vote count alone doesn't settle the order.

Janette Slack: the even-handed leader

The Electronica name at No. 1 has the most balanced profile in the top five: 2,134 SoundCloud followers, 3,058 on Mixcloud, 6,579 on Instagram and 1,390 Last.fm listeners. No single platform carries the profile. Janette Slack is at the top on breadth rather than one outsized number.

N.O.A: Hard Dance at the sharp end

N.O.A is the only Hard Dance act in Hong Kong's top five and the board's only entry from the hard genre family. The 3,540 votes point to a committed following. So do 13,374 Instagram followers, 1,031 Spotify followers and 1,010 YouTube subscribers. One point short of the top spot, N.O.A is the closest challenger in the city.

Celestial 天上: the melodic vote-winner

No act in Hong Kong has more votes than Celestial 天上. The Melodic House & Techno act adds 3,070 Spotify monthly listeners, 767 Spotify followers and 694 Last.fm listeners. Celestial 天上 has the votes and is close enough to the summit to make a run at it.

The chasing pack

Ardolf carries the second Melodic House & Techno banner in the top five, scoring 359 from 777 votes. Norvik, the board's second Electronica name, follows on 328 from 820 votes.

Both profiles show platform figures that swing widely from one service to the next. For that reason, we're reading their positions through score and votes, not follower counts. The 31 points between them is the next fight worth watching.

The Hong Kong sound

On DJ Radar, Hong Kong's defining trait is range. Each member of the top three comes from a different lane: Electronica, Hard Dance and Melodic House & Techno. Across the full five, Electronica and Melodic House & Techno have two spots each, and Hard Dance holds the fifth.

That spread is the story. This isn't a city where one genre runs the board. An Electronica leader, a Hard Dance challenger and a melodic vote-winner are separated by single digits, and none of them has room to relax.

What to watch

With one point between first and second, the podium order could change with the next movement on the board. Celestial 天上, already the city's vote leader, is in striking distance too. Further back, Ardolf and Norvik need a serious push to close the 199-point gap to the podium. At the top, though, Hong Kong has one of the tightest races on the board.
