Heavyweights and Headliners: The State of Bass on DJ Radar

Bass is the broadest church in electronic music, and DJ Radar currently tracks 2,109 artists under its banner. But the top of the board tells a tighter story: the genre's leadership splits cleanly into two camps. American-led dubstep holds four of the top eight slots; British drum & bass holds the other four. The result is a ranking that reads like a transatlantic dialogue.

The dubstep frontline

No name carries the genre like Skrillex. The U.S. dubstep figurehead sits at #1 with a credit score of 923 and 11,430 votes—the largest mandate on the board by a wide margin. His reach is its own category: 22,846,095 Spotify monthly listeners, 12,000,000 Instagram followers, and 6,675,563 on SoundCloud. He is the genre's gravitational center.

Behind him, fellow American ILLENIUM lands at #3 (credit score 860, 8,196 votes), the melodic, emotive end of dubstep with 10,258,896 monthly listeners. Zeds Dead of Canada (#5, 846) and Israel's Borgore (#6, 845) round out the dubstep contingent. Borgore is a useful reminder that streaming numbers don't map neatly onto rank—his 3,805,479 SoundCloud followers dwarf his 610,265 monthly Spotify listeners, a profile shaped by the platform where bass culture grew up.

The drum & bass establishment

If dubstep brings the audience size, drum & bass brings the road miles. Sub Focus of the United Kingdom holds #2 (credit score 876, 7,871 votes) and logs 106 festival appearances. Just below, Chase & Status sit at #4 (854) with 123 festivals, one of the deepest live résumés anywhere on the board.

Then come the lifers. Andy C (#7) and Shy FX (#8) are tied on a credit score of 840, separated only by vote counts of 7,511 and 7,163. Andy C's 132 festival appearances are the highest of any leader here, a testament to a touring practice that predates the streaming era entirely.

Reading the numbers

What defines the sound, on this evidence, is range. Dubstep leans into platform-scale popularity; Skrillex and ILLENIUM are streaming giants. Drum & bass leans into the live circuit; Chase & Status (123), Andy C (132), and Sub Focus (106) are festival workhorses with deep Resident Advisor followings—68,838 for Chase & Status, 41,172 for Sub Focus.

The credit scores compress fast outside the top spot. From Sub Focus at 876 down to Shy FX at 840, just 36 points separate ranks two through eight. That tightness is the real headline: below Skrillex, bass leadership is a contest of inches, and a strong festival run or a viral release could reshuffle it at any time.

For newcomers, the top eight double as a syllabus. Start with Skrillex for scale, ILLENIUM for melody, Sub Focus and Andy C for drum & bass craft, and Borgore for the rougher edge. Together they map a genre family that's louder, wider, and more competitive at the top than the single word "bass" suggests.
