Downtempo's Big Four: Where Slow Music Earns Its Credit
By Sasha Volkov·August 2, 2026

Downtempo has never been a chart genre. It is the music that survives when the club empties out — built for headphones, back rooms and the long stretch before or after the peak. On DJ Radar right now, the downtempo family holds four ranked DJs, and the gap between first and fourth is 52 credit points.
Moby sits at number one with a credit score of 876 and 8,441 votes, the highest vote total in the family. DJ Shadow follows at 860 with 7,941 votes. Four Tet takes third with 846 and 6,655 votes, and Floating Points rounds out the board at 824 with 7,006 votes.
That last pairing is the most instructive line on the whole board. Floating Points pulls more votes than Four Tet — 7,006 against 6,655 — and still ranks below him. Credit score and popular vote are not the same instrument, and downtempo is exactly the kind of genre where the two pull apart.
The genre-tag problem
Here is the quiet oddity in the data: of the four leaders, only DJ Shadow carries "Downtempo" as a main genre. Moby, Four Tet and Floating Points are all tagged Leftfield / Electronica.
That is not a filing error so much as an honest description of how the sound works. Downtempo is defined less by a BPM range than by a set of priorities — texture over propulsion, sample and atmosphere over drop mechanics, arrangement that unfolds rather than builds. Artists who work that way tend to get catalogued under whatever adjacent label fits their release history, and "leftfield" is the widest net available. The family is real; the tag is slippery.
Two countries, four profiles
The board splits evenly by geography. Moby and DJ Shadow are listed from the United States; Four Tet and Floating Points from the United Kingdom. There is no dominant scene here, which is itself telling — downtempo travelled through record shops and radio long before it travelled through festival circuits.
The platform numbers scatter just as widely. Moby leads Spotify monthly listeners at 9,535,736, with DJ Shadow at 6,316,126, Four Tet at 3,068,875 and Floating Points at 630,368. But Four Tet holds the largest SoundCloud following of the four at 1,116,239, and DJ Shadow's 454,275 there outstrips his Instagram count of 231,272.
Most revealing is Resident Advisor, where the order scrambles completely. Four Tet leads with 91,202 RA followers, ahead of Moby's 80,123, Floating Points' 61,576 and DJ Shadow's 34,683. RA is a booking-and-listings ecosystem — it tracks who moves through club calendars, not who moves through streaming playlists. Third place on the credit board is first place among the people buying tickets.
What to watch
The top two are 16 credit points apart, which is close enough that vote movement could plausibly reorder them. The bigger structural question is whether downtempo stays a four-DJ family on the board at all, or whether the leftfield tag keeps absorbing artists who belong here.
For now, the shape is clear: an American pair holding the streaming numbers, a British pair holding the club infrastructure, and a genre that keeps refusing to be filed cleanly.
