Downtempo's Big Four: Moby, DJ Shadow, Four Tet and Floating Points Lead the DJ Radar Board
By Imani Brooks·August 5, 2026

Downtempo has always been electronic music's long game — the space where tempo drops, texture takes over, and careers are built on albums and reputations rather than peak-time bangers. On DJ Radar right now, that long game has produced a remarkably compact leaderboard: four DJs, 52 credit points between first and fourth.
Moby holds the top spot
At number one sits Moby (United States), filed under Leftfield / Electronica, with a credit score of 876 built on 8,441 votes — the largest vote haul of anyone on the board. The streaming footprint backs it up: 9,535,736 Spotify monthly listeners, 2,260,076 Spotify followers, and 3,627,988 Last.fm listeners. Add 1,578,606 Instagram followers and 467,200 on TikTok, and you have the broadest mainstream reach in the downtempo field by some distance.
DJ Shadow, 16 points back
DJ Shadow (United States) is the only artist here whose main genre is listed simply as Downtempo — the scene's namesake, in second at 860 with 7,941 votes. His profile skews toward the crate-digger heartland: 454,275 SoundCloud followers and 30,318 on Mixcloud, the largest Mixcloud following of the four. With 6,316,126 Spotify monthly listeners and 2,023,358 Last.fm listeners, the streaming numbers are substantial, even if the social side — 231,272 on Instagram, 14,100 on TikTok — runs quieter than Moby's.
Four Tet: the SoundCloud and RA favourite
Third place belongs to Four Tet (United Kingdom) at 846, on 6,655 votes. Two numbers stand out. First, 1,116,239 SoundCloud followers — the biggest SoundCloud audience on this board, more than double DJ Shadow's. Second, 91,202 Resident Advisor followers, the highest RA count of the four, ahead of even Moby's 80,123. That combination points to an artist whose weight sits squarely with the club-going, mix-hunting core of the scene rather than the casual streaming audience, where his 3,068,875 Spotify monthly listeners still make for a healthy showing.
Floating Points closes the board
Floating Points (United Kingdom) rounds out the four at 824, and here the vote count is worth noting: 7,006 votes — more than Four Tet received one place above. With 630,368 Spotify monthly listeners, 416,531 Spotify followers, 259,831 on Instagram and 61,576 RA followers, the profile is smaller in raw streaming terms but clearly commands committed support where it counts on the ballot.
What the board says about the sound
The genre labels tell their own story. Three of the four — Moby, Four Tet, Floating Points — are tagged Leftfield / Electronica rather than straight Downtempo. That's the modern shape of the scene: downtempo as a family that absorbs leftfield experimentation rather than a strict tempo bracket. DJ Shadow, the lone artist carrying the Downtempo tag itself, anchors the board to the genre's sample-based roots.
Geographically, it's a transatlantic affair: two Americans on top, two Britons behind them. And the platform splits are instructive. The US pair dominate Spotify and Last.fm; the UK pair over-index on SoundCloud and Resident Advisor relative to their streaming size. Same family, two different routes to relevance — one through the streaming mainstream, one through the club and mix ecosystem.
With only 52 points covering the whole board and vote counts that don't march neatly in rank order, none of these positions look untouchable. Downtempo may be slow music, but this table could move quickly.
