Downtempo Right Now: Moby Leads a Field Defined by Leftfield Electronica
By Imani Brooks·October 24, 2026

DJ Radar's downtempo family currently counts four DJs on the board, and that short list says a lot about what the genre means right now. Only one of them, Moby, carries *Downtempo* as a main genre. The other three, Four Tet, DJ Shadow and Floating Points, are all tagged *Leftfield / Electronica*.
That split is the clearest definition the data offers. Here, downtempo works less as a tempo range than as an umbrella that takes in the exploratory end of electronic music. Broadly, it's music that gives up peak-time pressure for mood, texture and space. The leftfield tag on three of the four leaders points to the experimental streak running through it.
The map spans the Atlantic. Moby and DJ Shadow are listed under the United States, and Four Tet and Floating Points under the United Kingdom.
The top four, in order
1. Moby: 909. Moby leads with a credit score of 909 and the board's highest vote count, 8,865. The platform numbers support the top spot: 9,762,195 Spotify monthly listeners, 2,340,874 Spotify followers, 1,080,000 YouTube subscribers, 1,735,793 Instagram followers and 3,627,988 Last.fm listeners. Each is the largest figure among the four.
2. Four Tet: 900. Four Tet sits nine points back on 900, with 7,751 votes, 3,148,497 Spotify monthly listeners and 1,319,456 Last.fm listeners. RA is the standout: Four Tet's 91,202 followers there lead the group, ahead of Moby's 80,123.
3. DJ Shadow: 888. This is where the board shows that votes alone don't set the order. DJ Shadow's 7,978 votes beat Four Tet's 7,751, yet a credit score of 888 lands third. The listening base runs deep: 6,286,693 Spotify monthly listeners and 2,023,358 Last.fm listeners, both second only to Moby. DJ Shadow also leads the four on Mixcloud with 30,318 followers.
4. Floating Points: 857. Floating Points rounds out the board on 857 with 7,032 votes. The profile leans toward RA, with 61,576 followers there against 645,963 Spotify monthly listeners. That RA figure is third in the group and well ahead of DJ Shadow's 34,683. Instagram is a quiet strength too: 267,839 followers, just ahead of DJ Shadow's 252,395.
How close is the race?
At the top, it's genuinely close. Nine points separate Moby (909) and Four Tet (900), and DJ Shadow's 888 sits 12 behind Four Tet. Below that the field opens up: Floating Points is 31 points off third and 52 off the lead. This is a contest for the top two, not a four-way photo finish.
The vote column runs from Moby's 8,865 down to Floating Points' 7,032, and it doesn't line up neatly with the scores. DJ Shadow out-polling Four Tet while ranking below them is the clearest example.
What the numbers say about the sound
Taken together, the four profiles show a genre with two centers of gravity. One is broad listening reach: Moby and DJ Shadow post the largest Spotify monthly and Last.fm figures on the board. The other is the club-facing audience captured by RA followers, where Four Tet leads and Floating Points runs third. Moby covers both, placing second on RA with 80,123.
That balance is what sets downtempo apart on DJ Radar. *Leftfield / Electronica* is the majority tag and *Downtempo* is the umbrella, and listening audiences and club audiences overlap instead of splitting. The genre is less a tempo than a temperament. Right now Moby sets it, with Four Tet close enough to make the next update worth watching.
