Downtempo, Decoded: Moby Leads a Board Built on Leftfield Electronica

Downtempo has always been a slippery label, and DJ Radar's current board shows why. Four DJs sit in the downtempo family right now. Only one of them, Moby, has Downtempo as a main genre. Four Tet, DJ Shadow and Floating Points are all tagged Leftfield / Electronica.

That split is the best way into the scene. On this board, downtempo is less a single tempo or template than an umbrella. It covers electronic music that leans toward listening rather than peak-time pressure, where texture, atmosphere and patience count as much as impact. The leaders reflect that range: the family's most-streamed name, followed by three artists filed under the more exploratory leftfield tag.

The board right now

1. Moby — 908

Moby, listed under the United States, leads with a credit score of 908 from 8,865 votes, the highest vote count in the family. Moby also has the widest listening reach of the four: 9,776,510 Spotify monthly listeners, 2,345,376 Spotify followers and 3,627,988 Last.fm listeners. Each is the top figure on the board.

2. Four Tet — 900

Four Tet, listed under the United Kingdom, sits 8 points back on 900, from 7,751 votes. The standout figure is on Resident Advisor (RA): 91,202 followers, the most on the board and ahead of Moby's 80,123. Four Tet also has 3,039,603 Spotify monthly listeners and 851,338 Spotify followers.

3. DJ Shadow — 887

DJ Shadow (United States) scores 887 from 7,978 votes, which is more votes than Four Tet received. Credit score and raw vote count don't always move together. DJ Shadow's 5,990,335 Spotify monthly listeners trail only Moby, and so do the 2,023,358 Last.fm listeners. DJ Shadow's 30,318 Mixcloud followers are the most in the family.

4. Floating Points — 856

Floating Points (United Kingdom) rounds out the board at 856 from 7,032 votes. Its 611,591 Spotify monthly listeners are the lowest Spotify monthly figure of the four. Yet its RA count of 61,576 ranks third on that platform, ahead of DJ Shadow's 34,683.

Two audiences, one family

Compare the platforms and the downtempo family can be read two ways. On Spotify monthly listeners and Last.fm, the order is Moby, DJ Shadow, Four Tet, Floating Points. On RA it is Four Tet, Moby, Floating Points, DJ Shadow.

Both UK-listed artists rank higher on RA. Both US-listed artists rank higher on the streaming numbers. Four names is a small sample, so treat this as a pattern, not a rule. Still, it fits a genre with a dual identity: part home listening, part club culture.

The board is also split evenly by country, with two leaders listed under the United States and two under the United Kingdom.

How close is the race?

Close at the top. Moby and Four Tet are 8 points apart, and the top three sit within 21 points of each other, from 908 down to 887. Below that the gap widens. Floating Points trails DJ Shadow by 31, and the full board spans 52 points from first to fourth.

That makes the No. 1 spot the one to watch. Moby has both the highest credit score and the highest vote total, but Four Tet's 900 keeps the leftfield side within reach.

The takeaway

Downtempo on DJ Radar is less one sound than a meeting point. Moby anchors the family under its own genre name, while Four Tet, DJ Shadow and Floating Points pull it toward leftfield electronica. For anyone mapping the scene, that tension defines it right now: the genre's own label against the leftfield tag, and streaming reach against RA following.
