Bass, Decoded: Dubstep Bookends the Top Eight While UK Drum & Bass Holds the Middle
By Sasha Volkov·October 28, 2026

Bass is the broadest umbrella in electronic music, and DJ Radar's board shows it: 2,108 DJs currently sit in the bass family. Look at the top eight, though, and a clear shape comes into focus. Three sub-genres carry the weight, and the way they divide the leaderboard says a lot about where the sound's center of gravity sits right now.
One family, three dialects
Dubstep claims four of the top eight places: Skrillex, ILLENIUM, Zeds Dead and Borgore. Drum & bass takes three: Sub Focus, Chase & Status and Andy C. Breakbeat has a single representative, Fatboy Slim, at No. 2.
What ties them together is the low end. Dubstep trades in half-time weight and sub-bass pressure. In drum & bass, fast rolling breaks set the pace and the bassline does the driving. Breakbeat swings on chopped, sampled drums. The tempos and dancefloors differ, but all three share the same obsession with what happens beneath the kick.
The country column lines up with that split. Every drum & bass act in the top eight is listed under the United Kingdom, and so is Fatboy Slim, which gives the UK four of the eight spots. The dubstep contingent is spread wider: the United States (Skrillex, ILLENIUM), Canada (Zeds Dead) and Israel (Borgore).
A clear No. 1
Skrillex leads with a credit score of 953 from 14,949 votes. The next-most-voted DJ in this group, ILLENIUM, has 8,398. The 38-point gap between No. 1 and No. 2 is the widest between any two neighboring spots on the list.
The wider profile fits that lead: 20,367,502 Spotify monthly listeners, more than double ILLENIUM's 9,601,112, which is the next-highest figure here. Add 12,092,333 Instagram followers and 89,527 on Resident Advisor.
The UK holds the middle
Below Skrillex, the board turns to the UK.
Fatboy Slim is second on 915 from 8,004 votes. Sub Focus, third on 899, has 8,002 votes. That's two votes apart but 16 credit points apart. Chase & Status sits fourth on 896, three points behind Sub Focus, with 5,775,093 Spotify monthly listeners and 68,838 RA followers.
Andy C at No. 5 is the most revealing entry. A credit score of 882 from 7,728 votes puts Andy C above ILLENIUM, even though Andy C has 793,889 Spotify monthly listeners to ILLENIUM's 9,601,112. Widen the lens and the pattern holds: all three drum & bass acts sit above ILLENIUM, Zeds Dead and Borgore, and each drew fewer votes than any of those three. Whatever the credit score measures, streaming reach and raw vote totals don't decide it on their own.
Seven points, four places
The real race is lower down. Andy C (882), ILLENIUM (879), Zeds Dead (877) and Borgore (875) are separated by seven points in total, and just two points apiece separate Nos. 6, 7 and 8.
The votes are just as close. Borgore has 8,156 to Zeds Dead's 8,138, yet sits a place lower. Of the three dubstep acts at the bottom, ILLENIUM has the most votes (8,398) and the largest Spotify audience, plus 592,900 TikTok followers. Zeds Dead brings 612,314 Instagram followers and 1,779,916 Spotify monthly listeners. Borgore counts 523,000 YouTube subscribers.
What defines bass right now
Read from top to bottom, the board describes two scenes that share one name. Dubstep has the headline act, the biggest streaming numbers and the widest geographic spread. Drum & bass has a UK core holding Nos. 3, 4 and 5 back to back, and it outscores the dubstep pack below it on fewer votes. Breakbeat has just one name in the top eight, and that name holds No. 2.
For now the top spot looks settled, with Skrillex 38 points clear. The part of the table to watch is below it, where seven points cover four places.
